Since the legalisation of Cannabis in various countries including South Africa more and more information has emerged regarding the medicinal benefits of cannabidiol (CBD). The research thus far has shown that CBD is generally safe with few untoward side effects. However, like with other medicines and medical supplements it is important to consult your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking CBD for its health benefits. One of the reasons why this is important is because CBD can interact with the medicines which you are already taking. This includes vitamins, supplements, prescription and over-the-counter medications. What this means is that CBD can change the way in which your body processes other medications, vitamins or supplements either by increasing the effect of your other medicine or by decreasing it. Some of the common interactions with Cannabis are listed below:
- Antidepressants (such as fluoxetine, or Prozac)
- Medications that can cause drowsiness (antipsychotics, benzodiazepines)
- Macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin)
- Heart medications (some calcium channel blockers)
Whilst most of the known drug interactions with CBD are moderate there are some drug interactions which are major hence the importance of speaking to your healthcare professional. The fact that CBD may interact with the medicine you are taking does not necessarily mean that you can no longer take CBD. It might just require your doctor or pharmacist to adjust your dose and that is why it is important to consult with them before you start taking CBD.
